Adding New Connections

To add a new connection, click the New Connection button located in the Management section of the main toolbar (Figure 1).  Once you select the New Connection option you will be prompted to select what type of connection you would like to add.  At this point you will be able to select from a Beyond Remote, Terminal Host or XP Remote Desktop connection (Figure 2).  Select the type of connection you would like to add and then click the OK button.

Adding a Beyond Remote Connection

When adding a Beyond Remote connection, the following screen will be displayed (Figure 3).  From this screen you will be able to enter the detailed connection information about this new connection.
  • Connection name is a name that you assign to the connection like "Joes Computer" or "CAD Host".
  • Host name or IP address is the Host name or IP address of the computer you want to connect to.
  • Browse will allow you to browse your network and select a computer instead of typing it in.
  • Port is the port number you want to connect on.  By default this is TCP port 5424.
  • Default Viewing Mode will allow you to specify how you want to view this computer when you first connect.  You can choose from Standard, scaled or Full Screen.  Note: while viewing a remote computer you can cycle through the viewing modes by using the F12 key.
  • Preferred Color Mode will allow you to specify the color depth, you can choose from 16, 256, 16k or Maximum Available Colors.  The higher this setting the more bandwidth is required.  For example, if you dialup to the Internet you may not want to select anything above 256 colors as it will slow your viewing down.  However, the lower the color mode is set to the lower the quality.
  • Authentication method will allow you to select between "Standard Beyond Remote", which will use the master password of the remote computer or "Integrated NT Authentication" that will use Windows accounts to authenticate by.
  • Last connected on is the last date and time you connected to the remote computer.
  • Last known MAC address is the MAC address of the remote computer.  This will not be displayed until the first time you connect to the remote computer.
  • Send Wake on LAN Request will allow you to turn on a remote computer on your local area network.  You must first connect to that computer so the MAC address can be retrieved.  After the first connection the MAC address will be retained.  In the even the network card it changed on the remote computer Beyond Remote will always update the MAC address every time you connect to this computer.

    If you would like to tweak the performance of Beyond Remote there are two settings you can change under Advanced (Figure 4).

    Block Size will allow you to specify the block size the remote Host uses when transferring screen data.  The default is 16 but can be changed to 8, 16, 32 or 64.  You may want to experiment with this setting to see what setting works best for you.  However, this is not necessary as 16 works great on most computers.

    Frames Per Second is the maximum frames per second you would like to view the remote computer in.  The default is MAX but can be changed to 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or MAX.  The lower this setting the less demanding Beyond Remote will be on the Host side and the less bandwidth it will use.

    Adding a Terminal Server Connection

    When adding a Terminal Host connection, the following screen will be displayed (Figure 5).  From this screen you will be able to enter the detailed connection information about this new connection.
  • Connection name is a name that you assign to the connection like "Terminal Host 1" or "Application Terminal Host".
  • Host name or IP address is the Host name or IP address of the terminal Host you want to connect to.
  • Browse will allow you to browse your network and select a terminal Host from the list.
  • Screen area is the size of the terminal Host window.
  • Connection startup will allow you to specify if you want to view the terminal Host window in a window or full screen when you connect.

    Adding a Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection

    When adding a Windows XP Remote Desktop connection, the following screen will be displayed (Figure 6).  From this screen you will be able to enter the detailed connection information about this new connection.
  • Connection name is a name that you assign to the connection like "Freds Computer".
  • Host name or IP address is the Host name or IP address of the remote computer you want to connect to.
  • Browse will allow you to browse your network and select a computer from the list.
  • Screen area is the size of the viewing area once connected.
  • Connection startup will allow you to specify if you want to view the remote computer in a window or full screen.
