I am trying to remote control my retired father's computer at his (repeated!) request.

He has Embarq DSL service and modem. The external IP is 71.55.228.138. His PC runs on WinXP and its IP is 192.168.2.2 He is running a registered version of BR2.0 host. He is physically located in Florida. He has a retistered version of BR2.0 and is the "host."

I have a Win2k machine connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. The router is connected to a DSL modem. My IPs are
external IP: 200.88.200.178 (at the modem, provided by Codetel, the ISP)
Modem gateway address: 10.0.0.1
Linksys IP (provided by modem DHCP) 10.0.0.5
Linksys gateway IP 192.168.1.2
My PC (static IP): 192.168.1.136
5424/5425 are being forwarded to 192.1681.136 by the Linksys.
I am in the Dominican Republic.
I also have a registered version of BR2.0 and am the "console"

I have accessed the DSL modem and it is "open": all ports are being forwarded to the Linksys wireless router. I don't know about my dad's DSL modem.

I cannot connect to his PC using th 71.x.x.x IP address. When I try the forwarding/internet test from the console, it fails. All attempts at connection fail. We have tried ReverseConnect, direct connect from the Console, everything, and all connections fail.

Suggestions? Recommendations?

If you want to connect to his host then you will need to open TCP port 5424 in his router and port forward to the computer on his LAN that you want to remote comtrol; this is done in his DSL model/router. For instructions on how to do this for a wide range of hardware please see this post http://www.dataapples.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=332

If you would like to do a ReverseConnect then your router needs to be configured because he will be connecting to you. I would think this would be the easiest for you since you already know how to access your router. I believe the problem you are having is that the port forwarding is not setup correctly because of two hardware devices in that would need to be setup for forwarding. For example, you would need to forward TCP port 5424 from your DSL modem to your wireless router and then forward from your wireless router to your computer. This kind of setup in regards to port forwarding can get confusing to say the least. I would recommend setting this up in small steps. First, connect your computer directly to your DSL modem/router and setup port forwading there and get it working. Once that's done you will probably have to setup the linksys with a static IP and forward from the DSL modem to the static ip on the linksys and then from the linksys to your computers static ip.

Hope that makes sense...

I will try your suggestion. Is this being complicated by my having a dsl modem > Linksys, while my dad has just his DSL modem > PC NIC?

Yes, it is. To simplify I recommend a Linksys access point and not a router/access point combo. That would give you the wireless without the router to complicate things. Besides, your DSL modem already performs that functionality (router/firewall), right?

Actually the modem says the firewall is disabled (it's passing everything to the router, which is acting as the firewall). I also have six wireless clients at home being supported by the router, as well as a Vonage TA, so can't just use an access point.

Ideally I would like to set up a PPTP and bring my dad's computer into our network. He is computer illiterate and I don't think I could talk him through setting up a VPN, assuming I could do it in the first place here (haven't researched it much yet.) If we can get BeyondRemote working, it would help set up the VPN too, I expect.
